GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems – suites of software that allow us to work with spatial data for mapping and analysis. As the names implies, it’s primarily about features on the earth’s surface, like roads and rivers and parcel boundaries. But it also includes things like soils, and slopes, and satellite images, and GPS (the Global Positioning System). GIS provides a rich environment for visualising and modelling these features and their spatial relationships.

We’ve started this blog as a way to better communicate with the GIS users on the Lincoln University campus. It’s about common problems and solutions, and sharing the successes and frustrations that go with doing spatial analysis.

Please think of it as your forum for all things spatial.
