Studying the effects of UV radiation on grape composition and wine quality

Increasing levels of UV radiation reaching the earth’s surface due to the depletion on the ozone layer can have a profound effect upon plant growth and development. Pictured are three metal frames containing different UV-transmitting plastics. These were constructed by PhD student Melissa Talbot. Her project has recently started and will investigate the effects of UV radiation on the chemical composition of grapes and wine quality with emphasis on compounds related to ageing.
