{"id":2496,"date":"2019-09-12T13:49:58","date_gmt":"2019-09-12T01:49:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.lincoln.ac.nz\/gis\/?p=2496"},"modified":"2023-05-07T03:20:06","modified_gmt":"2023-05-07T03:20:06","slug":"two-nzs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lincoln.ac.nz\/gis\/two-nzs\/","title":{"rendered":"Two NZs?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>New Zealand often suffers from being overlooked on world maps.\u00a0 At least one map has tried to reverse that trend.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to world maps, NZ has a problem.\u00a0 We often get forgotten!\u00a0 \u00a0So much so that there&#8217;s a whole section of the internet dedicated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/MapsWithoutNZ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">documenting this<\/a>.\u00a0 One doesn&#8217;t need to look very far to see<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?tbm=isch&amp;source=hp&amp;biw=1440&amp;bih=740&amp;ei=TSxSXfv_GJjc9QP2gYq4Dg&amp;q=world+map+missing+new+zealand&amp;oq=w&amp;gs_l=img.3.0.35i39l2j0l8.1380.1380..3163...0.0..0.183.364.0j2......0....1..gws-wiz-img.jnvvWYTICAk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> lots of examples<\/a>.\u00a0 Even the United Nations forgets about us, and we&#8217;ve had quite a lot to do with them in the past few years:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2497\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2497\" style=\"width: 1240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d-blogs.lincoln.ac.nz\/gis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/1415848679641.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2497 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d-blogs.lincoln.ac.nz\/gis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/1415848679641.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1240\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lincoln.ac.nz\/gis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/1415848679641.jpg 1240w, https:\/\/blogs.lincoln.ac.nz\/gis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/1415848679641-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.lincoln.ac.nz\/gis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/1415848679641-1024x578.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.lincoln.ac.nz\/gis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/1415848679641-768x434.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1240px) 100vw, 1240px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2497\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Where&#8217;s NZ?<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That&#8217;s why I was so flabbergasted (yes, flabbergasted) when I came across a map with the opposite problem recently &#8211; not zero, not one, but TWO New Zealands:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d-blogs.lincoln.ac.nz\/gis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/IMG_20190426_195317919.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2498\" src=\"https:\/\/d-blogs.lincoln.ac.nz\/gis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/IMG_20190426_195317919.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4160\" height=\"3120\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a closer look &#8211; one for each side of the map:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d-blogs.lincoln.ac.nz\/gis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/TwoNZs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2499\" src=\"https:\/\/d-blogs.lincoln.ac.nz\/gis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/TwoNZs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"904\" height=\"594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lincoln.ac.nz\/gis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/TwoNZs.jpg 904w, https:\/\/blogs.lincoln.ac.nz\/gis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/TwoNZs-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.lincoln.ac.nz\/gis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/TwoNZs-768x505.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 904px) 100vw, 904px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s partly because of where we&#8217;ve ended up in Zealandia&#8217;s tectonic wandering, but it also has to do with human convention.\u00a0 Just bad luck that we&#8217;ve ended up on the opposite side of the world from the <a href=\"https:\/\/gisgeography.com\/prime-greenwich-meridian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prime Meridian<\/a>.\u00a0 They don&#8217;t call us <a href=\"https:\/\/www.antipodesmap.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Antipodes<\/a> for nothing.<\/p>\n<p>If I&#8217;m going to feel sorry for anyone (or anywhere) on this map it would probably be Antarctica.\u00a0 A whole continent barely gets a look in.\u00a0 This is but one small victory in a great battle of not being forgotten by the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<p>C<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New Zealand often suffers from being overlooked on world maps.\u00a0 At least one map has tried to reverse that trend.
